FEEDING
Food! Oh my, do rabbits love their food!
Did you know a rabbits digestive tract is the same as a horse! They are both hind gut fermentors, they have something called a cecum! it also means they need feed that is high in fibre. So a rabbits diet is super important.
Hay is 90% of their diet! Bunnies have very sensitive stomachs, therefore it’s very important you stick to a good food and if need to change you do it very slowly and gradually.
- 0-6 months old, Continuous pellets and unlimited hay. Oaten hay and Lucerne hay. Lucerne hay is great for those growing babies as it’s high in calcium!
- 6 months+ Small amount of pellets with majority of their diet being hay, Oaten hay. Lucerne hay will need to be restricted as a treat as it’s not needed as much in your older rabbits as it can cause bladder sludge and un needed weight gain.
Veggies, Veggies are a great way to treat your bunny, but keep in mind most are sugary and have a high content of water. So they need to be given limited, too much can cause diarrhoea which in rabbits can be fatal! Veggies are essential to bunnies but do need to be limited. They can’t have all kinds either but here’s a few of bunnies favourites that they can eat,
- Spinach
- carrot
- kale
- bok choy
- parsley
- mint
- broccoli
- basil
- cucumber
- banana
- Apple (no seeds)
