DESEXING
Importance of desexing! Where do we start…Desex desex desex!
Desexing is SUPER important and highly recommend.
Whether you have only one, it’s inside or not planning babies you still need to desex. Now, desexing helps a lot! In your favour as well as the bunnies.
let’s start with the males,Males if not desexed will get hormonal and hump, spray urine up your walls, get frustrated and aggressive, nip, and more difficult to toilet train as well as smelling more! Although not as a high chance as females but they still run their risks high of getting testicular cancers and have a lowered life span. Bunnies sex drive is high so it’s important to desex to remove those hormones to prevent them getting frustrated with them selves. It also prevents all what was mentioned above, so what’s stopping you! Males can be desexed 5-6 months of age, as soon as those balls drop. It does not change their “cute” behaviour they will still be the same cute bunny afterwords.
Females, Females hormones run high and get very hormonal and temperamental, So it’s extremely important the ladies get done too. They get moody, smelly, temperamental, nippy, frustrated, aggressive, false pregnancies, and have such a high chance of getting uterine cancers.. you can desex them 5-6 months of age. By the time a female is 2 years of age, she has over 80% chance of already having uterine or ovarian cancer. Now how sad is that, something we can so easily prevent!
It doesn’t matter if she’s never had babies or if she was a breeder the percentage stays the same. Reason being such a high percentage is because of their over active Reproductive system, but mainly age.
False pregnancies, When females are not desexed their hormones run high like mentioned. But to an extent where they can believe they are pregnant. They go through all symptoms of pregnancy, weight gain, moody, milk production, nesting behaviour, even contractions. They believe they are pregnant and get depressed when no babies arrive.. It is so so stressful and upsetting for them. Eventually this will kill her, repetitive false pregnancies.
Desex your ladies!!
Anaesthetic risks,Yes, a rabbit under anaesthetic can be fairly risky. And for some of you the percentage of risks aren't worth it for you. But all anaesthetics on any animal are risky. So please weigh out the statistics properly. You must go to a vet that is experienced and knowledgeable on rabbits. There are plenty of exotic vets that desex rabbits for a living! Definitely beneficial for the rabbit in the long run.
Go make that appointment!!
